CHAPTER 8

SLOANE

I was still reeling from my time with Dunn when Jethro pulled into the parking lot at the river tubing place. The conversation on the way over had stalled several times. I tried to keep it going by asking questions about the tour, the songs the band had been working on, and how Jethro liked the new house he’d bought outside of Nashville.

Either his overnight bout with food poisoning had rendered him silent or he could tell something with me was off. He’d always been able to read me pretty easily. I was hoping our time apart had dulled his ability to figure out what was on my mind.

“So Dunn did right by you last night at the barbecue?” Jethro slid his sunglasses to the top of his head and scoped out the parking lot.

“Um, yeah. Everyone was super excited to meet him. I mean, it would have been better if you’d been able to make it, but he came through.” I tried to keep my voice light, like I hadn’t lucked into the best night of my life after my brother bailed on me.

“You must have worn him out. He still wasn’t up when I left the hotel. What time did you get home last night?” Jethro thumped his thumbs against the steering wheel while we waited for the rest of the guys to show.

“Oh, it was pretty early. I think I was home by nine.” No need to share that Dunn stayed with me. Jethro would blow a gasket if he knew what the two of us had been up to all night.

“Huh. I guess he must have stopped somewhere after he dropped you off. It’s about time he loosened up.” My brother shot me a smirk. “I was starting to get a little worried about him, but I guess he finally took advantage of being on all those damn lists.”

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. “What lists?”

“Hell, Sloane, that motherfucker’s on all of them.” Jethro held up a finger each time he rattled one off. “Sexiest country stars under thirty, most ripped musicians, guitarists most likely to get mauled by fans… the ladies love him, some of the dudes, too.”

“Oh, I guess I didn’t realize…” My voice trailed off to nothing. Of course, Dunn was on all of those lists. He was the whole package—hot, talented, kind-hearted—every woman’s dream.

“There they are.” Jethro killed the engine and climbed down from the truck he’d rented.

The last person I wanted to see at that moment was Dunn. Not when my world had just been flipped upside down. He’d told me he loved me, that he’d been nuts about me for years, but that didn’t make sense. Not when he could have anyone he wanted.

I slid down from the truck and walked around the back bumper, where Jethro greeted the rest of the band. Shane had his arm wrapped around Britt, while Spike and Mickey had a woman on each arm. Dunn stood behind them. His eyes lit up when he saw me.
